Newsies:
About:
Newsies is based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899. Everything that happened in the strike is included in the movie and the musical. However, they are a few tweaks in the story line. For example, in the movie and musical, the main guy (or the leader) is a boy named Jack Kelly. However, in the actual event the main guy (or the leader) was Kid Blink. Also, in the movie and musical Jack Kelly escaped from a juvenile detention facility (or "The Refuge"). In the actual strike, Kid Blink did not even go to a juvenile detention facility. Finally, in the movie and musical, Theodore Roosevelt helped Jack and the Newsies with the strike against Pulitzer and Hearst. In the actual strike, Theodore Roosevelt didn't do anything about the strike.
Movie:
The movie version of Newsies came out in 1992. It's based on an actual event called the Newsboys Strike of 1899. It was about a group of orphan and homeless children who sell newspapers to make money to buy food and they all live in a newsboys' lodging house. Each morning the Newsboys get up and get ready to sell newspapers to the people of New York City. We meet one of the Newsboys and his name is Jack "Cowboy" Kelly. His dream is to move out west to Santa Fe. At the same time, he also has to hide from Snyder, who runs the juvenile detention facility (or "The Refuge"). When he meets another boy named David (or as the Newsboys called him, "Davey") and his little brother Les, he tries to get them to join them in selling newspapers. When escaping from Snyder one day, Jack, Davey, and Les run into a club where Jack's old friend Medda performs. After he confesses that he escaped from "The Refuge", he also admits that a certain president helped him out and that president was Theodore Roosevelt. When the Newsboys tell Jack and Davey that Pulitzer and Hearst raised the prices of the newspapers, they decided to work together and go on strike against Pulitzer and Hearst. However, when Snyder finally catches Jack at a Newsboy rally he tells Jack that if he doesn't work for Pulitzer and Hearst, then he goes straight back to "The Refuge". Therefore, Jack worked for Pulitzer and Hearst until two people who work for Pulitzer and Hearst start beating up Davey he decides to quit and continue to go against Pulitzer and Hearst. In the end, with a little help from Theodore Roosevelt, the Newsies got what they wanted and most importantly Jack decided not to go to Santa Fe. He felt he would rather stay with his family in New York (the Newsboys, Davey, Les, and their sister Sarah).
